Unformatted text preview: Stephanie Shum Social Studies 11 Completion Summer 2007 Assignment #13 1. NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. In short, it is a collaboration consisting of countries from both North American and Europe and was formed because they pledge to all work towards accomplishing the same common goals to benefit the North Atlantic region. First signed on April 4, 1949, there are 26 countries in the treaty and hopefully more countries will dedicate themselves to this wonderful cause. The main goal of the organization is to secure freedom and security to everyone in the world. The Warsaw Pact in 1955 was created as a protection from what they Central and Eastern European communist states as a potential threat from the NATO alliances. Created on May 14, 1955, the Pact was kept until 1989 when countries began to dispatch from the group after political changes in the Soviet Union.
