Click text: Psychology: An Introduction (12 th ed.) Click “2” on the select a chapter tool bar. Click Live!Psych on the left hand menu. Select 2.3 and 2.4. Write a 350- to 700-word response to the following: Explain the communication process of neurons in the brain. List some common neurotransmitters and describe their effect on behavior. The communication process between neurons in the brain is rather complex. However, having it broken down into a simple explanation can put it into a much more understandable form. Neurons in the brain communicate through electrochemical processes. When a neuron receives enough of a proper message it undergoes a rabid electrical change known as an action potential, which is also known as a nerve impulse. These action potentials travel down the axon (which is a part of the nerve) to the terminal buttons at the end of it. This action causes a release of neurotransmitters which sends a message to the next neuron. The place where a nerve impulse is transmitted from is called a synapse. Because neurons do not touch each other, they have what is called a synaptic cleft, which is a tiny gap, between each other. Messages have to cross this cleft and the neuron on the side of the synaptic cleft sends the message, which is called a synaptic neuron. The one that receives the message on the other side is called the postsynaptic neuron. The vesicles that are filled with neurotransmitters are housed in a sac called synaptic terminal. They serve as chemical messengers to other neurons as well and when a neural impulse or action reaches the terminal, it causes some o f the synaptic vesicles to release their
