Homework 1 1. In a multiprogramming and time-sharing environment, several users share the system  simultaneously. This situation can result in various security problems. a. What are two such problems? Two problems include stealing data or programs or even the resources without  permission, such as memory and disk space b. Can we ensure the same degree of security in a time-shared machine as in a  dedicated machine? Explain your answer. Being that individuals have the ability to break into secure systems, it is not  guaranteed that the degree of security in time shared machines would be the  same in a dedicated machine.  2. Describe the differences between symmetric and asymmetric multiprocessing. What are  three advantages and one disadvantage of multiprocessing systems? The overall difference between symmetric and asymmetric multiprocessing is that  symmetric multiprocessing input and output can be processed on any CPU while  asymmetric multiprocessing only has one master CPU and remainder CPU’s are  considered to be “slaves”.  Advantages Disadvantages  Save money  Complex in hardware and software  Run programs more quickly  Reliable 3. What network configuration would best suit the following environments? a. A dormitory floor.    LAN b. A university campus   LAN OR WAN: Depending on how big the campus is c. A state   WAN d. A nation   WAN
