CSC 301 Homework 5 Velma Teschemaker CSC301 Fall 2009 HW-5 (1) Why is it important for the scheduler to distinguish I/O-bound programs from CPU-bound programs? It is important for the scheduler to distinguish I/O bound programs from CPU bound programs because i/o  bound programs can only perform a small amount of computations and do not use up the entire quantum. CPU  bound programs on the other hands use the quantum. With that being said, it is very important for schedule so  that the higher priority is given to the I/O bound programs being that they utilize the resources in an more  efficient way.  (2) Discuss how the following pairs of scheduling criteria conflict in certain settings. a. CPU utilization and response time CPU utilization is increased as long as overheads associated with context switching are minimized.  b. Average turnaround time and maximum waiting time
