Topoi (topics) Common Topics Definition  –  Genus/Species                              Defines a category and argues a given item is a species within that genus.  “A deadly weapon is one that is more likely than not to lead to death if  used against another person. Therefore, when Roberts deliberately drove  his car onto the sidewalk where students were standing, he was  committing assault with a deadly weapon.” Division –    Whole/Part The purpose isn’t to classify or define something within the whole but to explain  characteristics of the part.  All ROTC students must wear their uniforms every Wednesday. Tom  Smith is an ROTC student and he was out of uniform when he wore  civilian clothes to classes last Wednesday.                                                            Subject/ Adjuncts                                The purpose is to identify something by its characteristics The skies are gray, students are carrying umbrellas, the weather forecast for  today must predict rain.            Comparison  –  Similarity/ Difference   -- an argument based on analogy Every licensed driver has a duty to avoid driving whenunder the influence of  alcohol.  Likewise a surgeon hasa duty to avoid operating on a patient when his  alertness isdiminished by prescription medications.
