Taylor Rawson T.A.- Sanchez Assignment 2 9 September 2009 The Basis of America: Economic or Democratic? Charles Beard believed that the office holders who fashioned the constitution were of more economic spirit. He believed that the founding fathers sought to further their own financial interests rather than do what was democratically sound for the constitution and nation. Thus, the office holders who ratified the constitution were more philosophical than anything, believing that the United States was originated on money, public securities, manufactures, and trade and shipping. Beard believes that therefore the constitution was ratified by one-sixth of adult males, most of them not farmers, or the majority of the population workers. He further goes on the state that it was uncertain if the ratification of the constitution was actually approved by New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Virginia, and South Carolina. Robert E. Brown disagreed with Beard, stating that the constitution was more based
