Homework due 2/4 Give a mechanism for each of the following reactions that is consistent with the rate law given for that reaction. Be sure to indicate the slow and fast steps in your mechanism. a) 2 A + 2 B ---> Products Rate = k[A][B] Since this reaction is 1st order in A and 1st order in B, this indicates that 1 molecule of A and 1 molecule of B react in or before the rate determining step. The second molecule of A and the second molecule of B must enter the mechanism after the rate determining (slow) step. Two possible mechanism are given below. The molecularity of each step is given in parentheses after the step. A + B ---> X (slow) (2) A + B ---> X (slow) (2) A + X ----> Y (fast) (2) X + A + B --> products (fast) (3) B + Y ---> products (2) other mechanisms are possible as long a only 1 molecule of A and 1 molecule of B react in or before the slow step and 1 molecule of A and 1 molecule of B react after the slow step. b)
