Discuss the potential conflict between biblical Christian ethics and intelligence.Biblical Christian ethics may find conflict with the behavior and attitudes of the intelligence community and its profession because the essential job functions required to collect intelligence often contradict the life Christians are called to live. In the first place, integrity and truthfulness are compromised through most intelligence gathering tactics, as is seen in spy and special agent duties. Additionally, forms of interrogation often hinge on the criticality of information sought, sometimes concerning life or death circumstances. The intelligence community would see the information as a necessity in this instance, and the human withholding that information as an obstacle to be broken down. From the Christian perspective, however, that human is still a person. It is their choice to withhold information, and their act of withholding does not equate to cruel treatment. Ephesians 6:12 (ESV) states, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, butagainst the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Although there is reason behind maximizing good and minimizing pain – often the goal of intelligence gathering efforts – Christian ethics would argue that the end does not justify the means.
