BREA OLINDA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
REGULAR BOARD MEETING
JUNE 11, 2007
The Board Meeting was called to order in the Jaster Education Center conference
room by President Kline at 5:31 PM and went immediately into Closed Session for
the purpose of discussing Student Expulsion Hearings, Public Employee
Discipline/Dismissal/Release/Employment, Property Negotiations – Security
Residence at Brea Olinda High School, Labor Negotiations, and
CALL TO ORDER
Members Hall, Hampson, Kline, Nowers, Rollino, Sokol, and Todd were present as
were Superintendent Harvey and Assistant Superintendents Flesher and Roland.
The Study Session convened at 6:10 PM.
Cheri Guerrero, Director of Special
Education, gave the Board an update on Special Education.
Some of the areas
addressed were historical timelines and changes in Special Education, PL 94-142
(Education of all handicapped children), Section 504–Rehabilitation Act, F.A.P.E.
(Free and Appropriate Public Education).
BOUSD operates 11 Special Day Classes
(SDC), 11 Resource Specialist Programs (RSP), three PreSchool Classes
(BOPEEP), and Designed Services (DIS) Operations which include speech and
language, vision services, deaf and hard of hearing, behavior intervention,
occupational therapy, and adaptive physical education.
Cheri also commented on
the reasons for increasing special education expenditures and out-of-district
During her employment at BOUSD she has scheduled ongoing staff
development for special education staff and implemented a change in the record
keeping process by staff members.
Some of the changes for consideration are
web-based IEP system, Community Advisory Committee, increase options for
Preschool by implementing the Teach/Success Program, and additional staff
The regular meeting was called to order by President Kline at 7:10 PM in the Council
Members Hall, Hampson, Kline, Nowers, Rollino, Sokol, and Todd were
present as were Assistant Superintendents Flesher and Roland, and Superintendent
It was moved by Member Sokol, seconded by Member Nowers, and carried with a
7-0 vote to adopt the June 11, 2007 agenda.
The pledge of allegiance was led by President Kline.

President Kline introduced Principals Carol Christman, BCHS; Jerry Halpin, BOHS;
Pam Gallarda, BJHS; Brenda Clark, Fanning; and Celeste Beroza, BOTA President.
INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS
President Kline stated there was no action taken in Closed Session.
CLOSED SESSION REPORT
President Kline reflected on the extraordinary achievements by BOUSD students.
Superintendent Harvey mentioned this week’s celebrations – Brea Jr. High
promotion on Wednesday, June 13
, 3:00 PM at the high school stadium; Brea
Canyon High School graduation at 6:00 PM on June 13
; and Brea Olinda High
School graduation on Thursday, June 14
, 5:00 PM at CSUF.
