Unformatted text preview: Pharmacology 310: Introduction to psychosis and antipsychotics 2/23/2010 and 2/25/2010 lecturer: Lara Collier The goals of this lecture are to familiarize you with the basic diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia, the possible causes of the disease and the defects in neurotransmission that are thought to cause symptoms. We will discuss the pharmacodynamics, uses, limitations and side effects of antipsychotic drugs. We will conclude with a brief discussion of recently FDA approved antipsychotics and future directions for the pharmacotherapy of schizophrenia. Possible future directions Slide: NATURE OF PSYCHOSIS AND SCHIZOPHRENIA Psychosis denotes a variety of mental disorders characterized by a loss of contact with reality and impairment great enough to prevent the individual from participating in everyday life. Schizophrenia is a particular group of psychoses characterized by clear sensorium but marked thinking disturbance.
