Indians, Servants, and Slaves in the Colonies - Indians - Conflicts with English - Algonquians: - 20-30 tribes who lived around the Jamestown area, aka Powhatan Confederacy because they were led by Powhatan - Agricultural society - Organized into small communities that would move every 2-3 years - Matrilineal: - many Native American societies passed land through mothers side (mothers to daughters) - men hunted, women performed agricultural labor - organized society - English thought their way was right, Native Americans were wrong - English attempted to convince Native Americans to do things their way. They gave Powhatan English clothing and English house, but he was not interested in changing his ways. - John Smith started communication with Native Americans, he was nice to them - When he left, people used kidnapping as a mean of getting food. Got corn as ransom. - Pocahontas: daughter of Powhatan - Was taken captive and taken to Jamestown - English captured the wrong person - She is often remembered for saving John Smith from his execution - Had standing within her community - Interested in English - Married John Rolfe. Rolfe went to Powhatan and asked for Pocahontas’ hand.
