- Manifest Destiny: John Tyler’s cause, it was good, natural, ideal to want to expand and take over new territories - Mexican American War: o Polk sent troops to Nueces River without permission of Texas o Ordered troops to cross Nueces into disputed territory o American troops shot at Mexico, several were killed o Polk said to Congress that “American blood was shed on American soil” o Declared Mexican American War o Navy marched into Mexico City o American forces were strong o Eventually Mexico acknowledged its defeat o Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo resolved border dispute, which was now the Rio Grande, included everything in west, cut Mexico in half, US paid $15 million for the land, Mexicans in former Mexico were granted American citizenship - “54 ° 40’ or fight” o Polk used this phrase o For Northwest land o If Great Britain doesn’t give land up to 54 ° 40' , US should fight for it o Polk never fought, he negotiated with England and they set boundary at the current boundary - Sarah and Angelica Grimke o Sisters from South Carolina whose father owned slaves o Became Quakers o Criticized father o Left SC, traveled north, began talking about slavery
