Civil War and Reconstitution Terms Secession • The pesky fire-eaters began to demand an end to the union • South Carolina seceded first on 12/20/1860 followed by Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina • Representatives from the first seven seceded states met that February to form a new nation: the Confederate States of America • The Confederacy came up with a constitution almost identical to the US constitution except it acknowledged state sovereignty and made slave abolishment impossible • Jefferson Davis of Mississippi became the president of the confederacy à epic fail Homestead Act • Enforced in 1862 • Allowed citizens to claim 160 acres of land and purchase it for a small fee after living on it for five years • North did this in order to economic development in the West and nationalism Morrill Land Grant Act • Enforced in 1862 • Transferred substantial public acreage to the state governments •
