UPRR Human Resource 2 Abstract Union Pacific Railroad has received great recognition for their time honored values as well as being listed within the top 100 companies to work for in several magazines. Although the media and the outside world views Union Pacific Railroad with high honors; would the employees view Union Pacific Railroad with the same high regards or would there be room for improvement? Our Human Resource Department is one of the major departments to help with the changes needed to accommodate the employee’s needs. Their primary goal is to ensure every employee is treated fairly and Union Pacific Railroad adheres to laws and regulations of the federal and state agencies. .

Human Resource 3 Running head: Union Pacific Railroad: Human Resource Department Now the course is almost complete, it is time to pull together all the information that was acquired during this course. During this course, we explored the inner requirements (ethics and legal) of a standard human resource department. The human resource department of any company is the glue that holds the ethics and fairness of a company together. In this paper, we will explore the human resource department of my current employer, Union Pacific Railroad. The Organization and Its Mission “Union Pacific Railroad (UP) was incorporated on July 1, 1862” (Wikipedia, 2009) under the Pacific Railroad Act of 1862 signed by President Abraham Lincoln. Under this Act Union Pacific was one of two railroads assigned with the task of creating the “first transcontinental railroad; the greatest, most daring engineering effort the country had yet seen. The idea was to span the West with iron rails from Omaha to Sacramento, to build a railroad across two-thirds of the continent and some of the most difficult terrain on earth.” (McCulloch, 2008) The principal objective when Union Pacific Railraod was created was to unite the people of America, by enabling them to receive the national news at the same time, open trade with foreign countries and allow the people of the United States to travel across safety without the fear of being attacked or getting lost through untraveled and unfamiliar trails. Union Pacific was very successful carrying freight and passengers until the decline of passenger due to the steady increase in price. Considering the economic decline of passenger service, Union Pacific Railroad went to carrying freight only.
