History 2057 15:44 Farmers wanted reform. They believed there was money to be made in the  agricultural industry, but were getting burned by current economic system.  Felt like world was changing in a bad way (little guy getting the shaft) Wanted and income tax(originally envisioned as a soak the rich tax Want system for electing senators changed. (State legislatures were selecting  senators) o Believed government would be fixed if senators had to answer directly to  the people Wanted tight regulation railroads Wanted to end protective tariff on manufactured goods.  o Manufacturers should have to compete on an international level Wanted free silver Farmers forced to sell crop at worst possible time for them economically.  Populist Party Comes about when farmers realize they are no getting any play from the  democrats or republicans, so they created their own party.  o Needed support from industrial workers.  All about an income tax, direct election of senators, change the sub treasury,  free silver. The push was free silver. Free silver would help everybody Free silver policy During the civil war, congress issued paper money. It was printed in green ink.  (greenbacks). It inflated the amount of money in circulation. Remained in  circulation following the war. Because of this, inflation started getting out of  control. Many believe we should transition to a strict gold standard. The  populists said that you could kinda have it both ways. You could base the  currency on metal, and increase the money supply. Base it on Gold AND  silver.  o Wealthy people favored a strict gold standard o Poorer people favored free silver.  Populist success. .? In states where there were mostly farmers the populist part did well.
