P. 70-82. o Subculture—a system of values, attitudes, modes of behavior, and lifestyles of a social group that is distinct from, but related to, the dominant culture of society. o Tattooed people are classified as a subculture. This subculture consists of tattooist and tattooee (the client) o Body decoration to represent accomplishment, membership of a group, social status, personal identity, etc. A form of self-expression/construction of self- identity. There is a rapid increase in the interest in tattoo as a popular culture Practice of tattooing is discovered by archaeologists; the word of tattoo came from Tahitian word in which ta-tu means “to strike”; ta was a sharp bone and tas were different types of bones used in the early times. P.72 Tattoos serve as social-symbolic roles such as marks of affiliation, personal identity, resistance, and identity change. Tattooist engages in impression management or the artists’ attempts to control the impression they present during service encounter; this includes 2 aspects: 1) Collective legitimization: ways that tattooists do to convince clients that tattooing is an art form; “putting a public display of professionalism” p. 76.
