Jenna Yu November 09, 2009 Soci 101 Wk 12 Reading Notes Kozol, Jonathan. 2005. “Still Separate, Still Unequal” . Mapping The Social Landscape . P. 578- 595. Kozol examines the issue of racial segregation in American schools five decades after the Supreme Court case of Brown v. Board of Education in 1954. Brown v. Board of Education made it illegal for any institution of education to segregate children based on their race in public schools. Although the law has been passed to illegalize segregation in schools, Kozol argued that the country had been involuntarily integrated and was a result of the force of the law. And that many public schools are rapidly resegregating. Kozol made many visits to a lot of public schools and found out that children in the poorer and segregated areas are deeply isolated. The percentages between African Americans and Whites in those isolate-area schools are almost 90 to 10. My reaction: It is without question that there is still segregation in public schools. I think that the degree of segregation is comparably high in a public school that consists of a large percentage of a minority group and it is lesser in a public school with majority of Whites. I tend to think that if a school has high percentage of one minority group, they tend to gather with themselves than with the majority. But if the minority is less, their only choice is to hang out with people of a different race/ethnicity. But the preference for gathering seems to be a limited explanation for
