Social class—categories of people who share common economic interests in a stratification system. Davis and Moore’s arguments: all societies are stratified and that stratification serves as a necessary function in a society. It arises because some jobs are more important than others (functional importance) and scarcity (needs for some jobs in society), which lead to different rewards among jobs. o Functional necessity of stratification: Distribute its members in social positions Induce and motivate them to perform in those positions-- by instilling the desire to fill certain positions and the desire to perform the duties attached to those people o Rewards (as inducements) and distribution of rewards according to positions give rise to social stratification Rewards contributed to one’s substance and comfort, humor and diversion, and self-respect and ego expansion; often they are associated with “rights” and
