Gender Identity 2 In order to understand gender identity, we must first understand the meaning. Gender identity is the feeling or sense of maleness or femaleness, differentiation of gender identity begins in infancy, and continues throughout childhood, and reinforced during adolescence; also called core gender identity. Gender identity can occasionally be hindered by hormonal errors during the fetus development stage. Further complications with gender identification may also continue later as internal conflict occurs between one’s physical sexual genitalia and inner sexual self The concept of gender identity is intimately related to the concept of gender role, which is defined as outward manifestations of personality that reflects the gender identity.
