The equipment used in this lab is shown in the figure. A steel disc of mass M and dius ins with negligible friction on linder r ring radius R spins with negligible friction on a cushion of air about a vertical axis. A mass holder of total mass m T is connected ia a string to a pulley placed on top of pulley Steel disc cylinder string M via a string to a pulley placed on top of the disc. The string passes over a cylinder of radius r and negligible mass. The mass m starts from rest at point A and moves A m T R axis t T with constant acceleration a to point B on the floor after a time t . The mass m T exerts a torque τ approximately given by h B a Stopwatch the equation: τ≈ m T gr (eq.1) Under the action of τ the steel disc rotates with constant angular acceleration α .
