BE 110 An Introduction to Biomechanics Fall 2005 Homework Assignment #1 Due Tuesday 10/4/05, 8AM before class 1. Reading assignment : Examine the “hierarchies (or length scales) of a continuum” in the specific case of the lung discussed in Section 1.10. This issue is also referred to as “scaling”. This issue arises in many biological tissues and illustrates the many layers of complexity in biological problems. Write down examples of problems in the lung at each of the length scales (cm, mm, μm, nm) at which they need to be analyzed. 2. Practice Problems (You do not turn them in for grading, they will be discussed in the practice sessions with the TAs) (a) Take for example the velocity vector v i . Use multiple ways to write down this vector using different notations: vector notation, physical notation, index notation, base vectors, etc. Determine the speed of the vector (i.e. the length of the velocity vector) separately from its direction (which you should express as a unit vector without physical dimension). (b) Consider a ball rotating at constant speed on a circular orbit with radius a and speed s.
