BE 110 An Introduction to Biomechanics Fall 2005 Homework Assignment #5 Due Tuesday 11/1/05, 8AM before class 1. Reading assignment : There is an effective way to represent the normal stresses and shear stresses on a geometric construct. It is called a Mohr’s circle. Study its construction (Section 4.3). Can you think of a practical application of Mohr’s circle. 2. Practice Problems (a) One of the most famous formulas in science is the drag of a viscous fluid on a sphere (see problem 4.3 for full details). The expression for the resultant force is useful in a variety of problems. One of them is to determine the molecular dimension (an order of magnitude estimate) of a macromolecule (protein, etc.). Describe how you would use this formula to estimate the “Stokes radius” of a molecule. (b) Show that the maximum shear stress is equal to (1/2) (τ ΜΑΧ − τ ΜΙΝ ), where τ ΜΑΧ is the maximum principal stress and τ ΜΙΝ the minimum principal stress. Show that the maximum shear
