Nina 1 Paola Nina Professor Gordon English 1302:-CRN: 72420 03 February 2009 Journal# 3: Packer & Bambara In the story “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara, there are various social issues that are reflected through the characters. Ms. Moore a retired college educated woman was determined to help out the youth in her community. She was mainly focusing her lessons to Sylvia a girl whose parents weren’t very interested in her. Along with Sylvia, the children in Ms. Moore’s class were very conscious about their financial needs. Bambara writes, “…but she steps out in the street and hails two cabs just like that. Then she hustles half the crew in with her and hands me a five- dollar bill and tells me to calculate 10 percent tip for the driver”(Bambara 1108). Although Ms. Moore was trying to teach the students arithmetic she was also trying to teach them a life lesson. They were charged eighty-five cents for the ride and Sylvia decides to not leave the driver a tip.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
