Mitochondria that are carefully isolated from other cellular components retain many normal mitochondrial functions. For example, isolated mitochondria can oxidize added pyruvate to CO 2 with corresponding reduction of O 2 and synthesis of ATP. A drug called Compound X has no effect on the ability of isolated mitochondria to oxidize pyruvate and consume O 2 , but X severely inhibits ATP synthesis. What does this tell you about the mechanism of action of Compound X? Explain your reasoning. B. A second drug, Compound Y, also severely inhibits ATP synthesis, but in the presence of Y, pyruvate oxidation and O 2 consumption are also inhibited.
