Mehmet Bayram APUSH 1 May 21, 2007 1. The author quotes the director of the Vicksburg National Park, “Americans  just   can’t   get   enough   of   the   Civil   War.”   Assess   the   validity   of   this  statement. Although we are approaching the 142 nd  anniversary of the Civil War, the boom  shows no signs of fading. Many factors of the Civil War make it mesmerizing to people,  such as the death count and the fact the slaves fought in this war too. Battles during the  war were destructive. All of these intriguing events make the Civil War attractive to  historians today.  The Civil War was the most devastating War in United States history; 620,000  Union and Confederate Soldiers lost their lives, almost equal to the 700,000 American  Soldiers that died in all the other wars the country has fought combined. Four times  more people died on the Battle of Antietam than on D-day on June 6, 1944.   The  frightening death toll gave the Civil War a horrifying but hypnotic fascination. Thomas  Hardy said, “War makes rattling good history; but Peace is poor reading”. The Civil War is described in detail to modern readers because of the diaries that  soldiers kept. Civil War armies were the most literate that ever fought in a war up to that  time. The diaries give the reader an unparalleled view of the Civil War by the people who  experienced it. The image of war has been kept in the families of the soldiers that fought
