Mehmet Bayram APUSH 1 May 21, 2007 1. The author quotes the director of the Vicksburg National Park, “Americans just can’t get enough of the Civil War.” Assess the validity of this statement. Although we are approaching the 142 nd anniversary of the Civil War, the boom shows no signs of fading. Many factors of the Civil War make it mesmerizing to people, such as the death count and the fact the slaves fought in this war too. Battles during the war were destructive. All of these intriguing events make the Civil War attractive to historians today. The Civil War was the most devastating War in United States history; 620,000 Union and Confederate Soldiers lost their lives, almost equal to the 700,000 American Soldiers that died in all the other wars the country has fought combined. Four times more people died on the Battle of Antietam than on D-day on June 6, 1944. The frightening death toll gave the Civil War a horrifying but hypnotic fascination. Thomas Hardy said, “War makes rattling good history; but Peace is poor reading”. The Civil War is described in detail to modern readers because of the diaries that soldiers kept. Civil War armies were the most literate that ever fought in a war up to that time. The diaries give the reader an unparalleled view of the Civil War by the people who experienced it. The image of war has been kept in the families of the soldiers that fought in the war. Historians are able to explain and describe the Civil War in great detail with all the sources they have. Soldiers who enlisted in the army did it for the love of their nation. They believed that
