Mehmet Bayram 11/16/06 APUSH #2 Chapter 1 from American Scripture by Pauline Maier changed my thoughts about the Declaration of Independence. Maier describes the Declaration of Independence in more detail than I have ever read before. I now look at the Declaration of Independence in a different way. Before I read the first chapter of American Scripture, I thought the Declaration of Independence was written and all the fighting stopped. I learned that the Declaration of Independence was written to stop the fighting but I didn’t know what it took to get it written. By reading Chapter 1, I understood that the Americans were scared of being independent, like they weren’t ready. The colonist didn’t want to be independent so they tried to stay dependent to their mother country, Britain. The colonist also did a lot to become independent. They asked the king for many things by protesting and with letters. The king passed a prohibitory act to the colonies which resulted in the colonies becoming independent. Even though it is only Chapter 1, Maier’s American Scripture
