Mehmet Bayram APUSH March 15, 2007 3. Describe the typical American home discussed in the Larkin Essay. Give a word picture of the typical home, its contents, its inhabitants, its kitchens, its menus & etc. A typical day for an American in his or her home in the early to mid nineteenth century would not consist of a shower, brushing his or her teeth, or washing their hands frequently. People literally walked around in waste throughout the day in the city. Compared to the present day living conditions, it was inhabitable. In a typical home of an average American family, there would be no bathroom. They would use the kitchen to fulfill the task of bathing. Not until the late nineteenth century did the system of bathing change. A bath would be washing oneself in the kitchen, and sometimes not even using soap because they were saving it for the clothing. Southerners used detached kitchens to wash themselves. Washing their face and hands once a day proved difficult enough for them. Sleeping conditions were very poor in the households.
