1 1 Lactic acid (pK a = 3.86) is found in milk. Tartaric acid (pK a1 = 2.98) is found in wine. Assuming the concentrations are the same and only these compounds contribute to the acidity, which would be the more acidic and have the lower pH? A) Milk B) Wine [HA] ] ][A O [H K 10 K - 3 a -pK a a 2 Today’s To Do Identify whether salt solutions formed by an acid- base reaction, or by dissolving the salt in water, have a pH less than, greater than, or equal to 7.0. Identify what happens to the pH if a salt of the conjugate base is added to a solution of a weak acid. Identify the stronger of two acids from their pK a values and the stronger of two bases from the pK a value of their conjugate acids. Predict reaction direction.

2 3 Acid – Base Properties of Salts Salts are formed from acid base reactions. Four possibilities! Strong Acid + Strong Base Strong Acid + Weak Base Weak Acid + Strong Base Weak Acid + Weak Base 4 Strong Acid + Strong Base HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) Na+(aq) + Cl (aq) + H 2 O(l) Na + and Cl do not react with water. Na + can’t donate a proton Cl is too weak of a base to remove a proton from H 2 O So a NaCl salt solution pH = 7 at 25 o C

3 5 Strong Acid + Weak Base HCl(aq) + NH 3 (aq) NH 4 + (aq) + Cl (aq)+ H 2 O(l) The chloride ion is too weak of a base to react with water.
