Unformatted text preview: Most common cause of diarrheal illness due to bacterial infection in the US Endemic worldwide Fragile-easily inactivated by conventional treatments (low pH, chlorine, heat) Associated with poultry and occasionally raw milk 14 species C. jejuni C. coli C. jejuni Gram -ve bacterium Morphology: slender, spirally curved rods 0.2 to 0.8 m wide and 0.5 to 5 m long Motile Characteristic corkscrew-like movement Motility involves polar flagella at one or both ends Until the mid 1970s, attributed to viral infection Problems with its isolation MICROAEROPHILE Need 5% Oxygen and 10% Carbon dioxide Air (20% Oxygen and 0.03% Carbon dioxide) Laboratory: poor competitor among other intestinal bacteria Special enrichment conditions are required Synthesize an enterotoxin: closely resembles cholera toxin; ETEC-like gastroenteritis Synthesize a cytotoxin which causes bloody diarrhea; Shigella-like dysentery Disease may be invasive; Salmonella like gastroenteritis Symptoms highly dependent on the virulence of the strain Begin abruptly with severe abdominal cramping followed by diarrhea About 30% of patients suffer from influenza- like symptoms: fever, headaches and dizziness Acute diarrheal disease similar symptoms as salmonellosis, shigellosis or yersiniosis Diagnosis: detection of bacteria in stool samples...
