Chapter 7 Outline I. Job Design: Early Approaches 1) Job Design: process of linking specific tasks to specific jobs and deciding what techniques, equipment, and procedures should be used to perform those tasks a) Job design influences the motivation of employees and possibly also their job satisfaction b) Scientific management i) Definition: set of principles and practices designed to increase the performance of individual employees by stressing job simplification and specialization ii) By breaking up the work into the smallest identifiable tasks, employees will be more efficient and effective when doing their jobs iii) Time and motion studies reveal how long it actually takes to perform a narrow task, and the best way to achieve optimum efficiency. c) Job enlargement i) Definition: increasing the number of tasks an employee performs but keeping all of the same tasks at the same level of difficulty and responsibility; a.k.a. horizontal job loading d) Job Enrichment i) Definition: increasing an employee’s responsibility and control over his or her work. Also called vertical job loading ii) Ways managers can enrich jobs for employees (1) Allow employees to plan their own work schedules (2) Allow employees to decide how the work should be performed (3) Allow employees to check their own work (4) Allow employees to learn new skills 2) Job Design: The Job Characteristics Model a) Job characteristics model: an approach to job design that aims to identify characteristics
