Unformatted text preview: A B C D E F Section 6.1 Defining Mixtures (continued) Objectives • Differentiate between total composition of a mixture, composition of the phases in a mixture, and the relative amounts of phases in a mixture. • Predict how a change in phase composition or phase amount affects the strength of a metallic alloy. In addition to knowing what components and phases are present in a mixture, we also need to know something about the microstructure . Microstructure is the size and arrangement of the phases. Even if the components and phases are the same, materials with different microstructures can have different properties. For example, plain carbon steel that is 0.76 wt% carbon in iron can be very ductile or very strong and brittle, depending on the microstructure. Two important terms that can become confusing are phase composition and phase amount . Phase composition describes the amounts of each component that are present in a particular phase.
