ADDICTION TREATMENT OPTIONS Abstract The treatment of addictions to alcohol, prescription drugs, illegal drugs, and even to other non-conventional substances has become an important part of the psychological community. There is an enormous amount of information available about ways to identify, treat, or prevent addictive behaviors. Three specific journal articles have been chosen for this paper and they cover the process of treating addictions, the use of group therapy in addiction treatment, and the benefit of using relapse prevention techniques as part of the treatment program for addicts. There is a common theme through all three of the journal articles used for this paper –

ADDICTION TREATMENT OPTIONS that we, as psychologists both clinical and therapeutic, have a lot of room left to do research on the identification, treatment, and prevention of addictions. All the authors included in their conclusions some type of comments about further research being needed and better application of therapeutic processes. Cummings research is the oldest of the three articles and he concentrates on identifying the stages for treating addicts. Antonio A. Morgan-Lopez and William Fals-Stewart concentrate on the use of group style therapy in treating various types of addicts. And finally Witkiewitz and Marlatt focus entirely on the prevention of relapses within groups of patients with addictions.
