EE 101A / Winter 10 Lab #2 (Week of 1/18/10) Page 1 of 3 Revised Lab 2: Diode Characterization Background Reading : Sedra & Smith, Sections 3.1 – 3.4 1. Motivation: We will use silicon diodes to convert AC voltage to DC voltage in next Lab. In this lab, we will characterize the silicon diode and two other types of diodes, light emitting diode (LED) and solar cell. 2. Silicon Diode: a. Connect a 10K resistor in series with a 1N4001 diode as shown below. The data sheet for the diode is posted on the class web site. The resistor prevents the accidental application of a high voltage that will damage the diode. b. Vary the applied voltage, and measure the current (I D ) as a function of the diode voltage (V D ) in both forward and reverse biased region. Limit 5V > V D > -5V. c. Plot I D as a function of V D . (Attach the plot to this report.) d. Determine the turn-on voltage of the diode. +
