CHAPTER 6 CARTILAGE AND BONE CONNECTIVE TISSUE Skeletal system includes bones, cartilage, ligaments, and other connective tissues that stabilize or connect bones. Bones store calcium and phosphorus. I. Cartilage Connective Tissue A. Basic description i. Semirigid connective tissue that’s weaker than bone, but more flexible and resilient. ii. Like all connective tissues, cartilage has a population of cells scattered throughout a protein fiber matrix embedded in a gel-like substance. iii. Chondroblast —cells that make cartilage matrix iv. Chondrocyte —Mature cartilage cells. Chondroblasts become these after they are encased in a matrix they produced and secreted. Occupy Lacunae (small spaces).Maintain the matrix and keep it healthy and viable. Avascular (no blood vessels) B. Functions of Cartilage (3) i. Support soft tissues 1. ex) C-shaped hyaline cartilage rings in trachea support the conn. Tissue and musculature of tracheal wall. 2. ex) Flexible elastic cartilage support the auricle (fleshy external ear). ii. Provide a gliding surface at articulations (joints), where two bones meet. iii. Acts as a model for the formation of most bones. (starting at embryonic stage, the cartilage acts as a rough draft that’s later replaced by bone tissue). C. Types of Cartilage (3) “H E F” i. Hyaline Cartilage —most abundant. 1. Provides support through flexibility and resilience 2. No clearly visible collagen fibers. (ECM looks translucent under a microscope). 3. Most surrounded by perichondrium (dense connective tissue covering). 4. found in trachea, part of the larynx, articular cartilage on bones, epiphyseal plates, fetal skeleton. ii. Elastic Cartilage 1. Provides highly flexible support 2. Has highly branched elastic fibers in ECM. 3. Surrounded by perichondrium. 4. Found in ear auricle, external auditory canal, epiglottis. iii. Fibrocartilage 1. Provides tensile (stretching) and compressional (compaction) support. 2. Numerous thick collagen fibers. 3. No perichondrium. (stress applied at fibrocartilage surface would destroy it anyway) 4. Found intervertebral disks (pads of fibrocartilage b/w vertebrae), menisci of knee (pads of fibrocartilage b/w tibia and femur), and public symphysis (pad of fibrocartilage b/w two pubic bones). D. Growth Patterns of Cartilage (2)

i. Intersitial —growth from within cartilage. Steps of growth: 1. Chondrocytes housed in lacunae undergo mitotic cell division 2. The 2 new cells occupy the same lacunae 3. As the cells start to synthesize and secrete new cartilage matrix, they’re pushed apart and now have their own lacunae. The new cells in their own lacunae care called chondrocytes.
