February 27, 2008 Physiology 42-202 Homework 3 1. Anabolic steroids have effects on several organ systems, so there are many deleterious side effects. Effects on the liver include a decreased excretory function. The liver can suffer from a bleeding cystic condition, and this could lead to death. Anabolic steroid use was also found to be linked to liver cancer, although this is rare. The cardiovascular system is suffers. Studies linked anabolic steroid use to cardiovascular system damage and problems with blood pressure and lipoproteins, like cholesterol. Heart disease and strokes are also possible. The major side effects include liver tumors and cancer, jaundice, fluid retention, high blood pressure, increases in LDL (bad cholesterol), and decreases in HDL (good cholesterol).Additional side effects include kidney tumors, acne, and trembling. Men suffer from shrunken testicles, reduced sperm count, infertility, baldness, development of breasts, increased risk for prostate cancer. Women face growth of facial hair, male-
