Why call it New South? -The South since reconstruction -not a lot of new for a long time and yet the appalacian is stuck here Perceptions of the old south: backwards, conservative, hospitality, pride, racist, family centered, plantation (grandeur), dirty, not health conscious (food wise), chivalry, honor code, country music, blues, jazz, rock and roll, gospel flowing out of the spirituals, ragtime, rich amer musical tradition…comes out of south and b/c nationalized, pride in linear heritage (proud to be southerner, defensiveness), accents, southern nationalist movement (the south will rise again), nascar, football, horseracing (Kentucky dirby), basketball, stereotyped Class with heavy emphasis on culture Epigraph: The south experienced defeat-very unamer experience, guilt over slavery at least other parts of the country saw them as guilty on slavery count and they themselves had misgivings, and poverty from cw on unamer exp, guilt and poverty makes southn into region that makes them underst hist and that hist has happened to it.
