Research Method Advantages Disadvantages Naturalistic Observation Provides a great deal of firsthand behavioral information. Is likely to be more accurate than reports taken after the fact. The participant’s behavior is more spontaneous, natural and varied than laboratory behavior models. Useful in forming hypotheses. Observer’s presence may alter participant’s behavior. Preexisting bias may be present from the observer; unclear whether observations can be generalized to other settings and other people. Case studies
