Scope of Physical Geography Methods in Physical Geography -Empiricism -Positivism (“scientific method”) Geographic Themes -Spatial Emphasis: -Location and place (where the thing is located and place refers to its characteristics) -Ecological View of Human-Environment Relations -Regional Analysis -Movement and Process Systems Theory -A system is a model or a representation of a portion of the natural or human landscape -A system has: -boundaries -components -linkages -Open system: has transfer of matter and or energy with the surroundings -Closed system: isolated, does not exchange matter and or energy with its surroundings -Feedback: something that causes a changed in the system leading to different effects -Thresholds and Equilibrium -Equilibrium Steady state equilibrium: happens over very short periods of time, long term little changes Dynamic equilibrium, threshold: short term lots of changes, in long term steady changes Maps, Projections and Scale Shape of the Earth -Geodesy: science of measurement of the shape of the Earth and its magnetic field
