October 17,2013 History 8: TA: Damian Nemirovsky Wednesday- 4:00pm- 4:50pm The Rise of the Mestizo’s Document 3.1 Colonial Mexican Racial Classification explores one of the many legacies left by the Spanish crown during the colonization of the America's; the Caste system. The Caste system was a system in which people were placed into a social hierarchy based on their skin tone. Due to the color of their skin, natives are viewed as ‘ barbaric ’ and ‘uncivilized’ in the eyes of the Europeans, thus they classify non-whites as lesser human beings and through this classification system people of color become dehumanized. It is this perceived racial inferiority of groups of people that served as a rationale for the Spanish belief that they were superior to the indigenous population. This perception of white superiority above all other skin tones made it possible for the Spanish crown to exploit the lands of the indigenous people. This system is
