HUMS 101 Job Shadowing Project HUMS 101 PAPER OVER JOB SHADOWING PROJECT
Magana 1 Research Portion of Paper Depending on the areas, ages, and people you plan on working with, your job can always fluctuate. As a future nurse, I plan on working with women that are in their pre-pregnancy stages, during pregnancy stages, and first years of an infant’s life (new born – 3 years old). So as a human service minor I plan on getting as much information in these areas. After reading journal and articles over different researches that I have gathered, I found that teen pregnancy and young adults are probably the age group that I would greater concerns with teen mothers, as a Human Service worker. As a Human Service worker, my devotion to all and any of my clients are to make sure they are given the support and help they need. This can result in a variety of different support, for example like money support (put on welfare), emotional support, or even medical support, etc. But as a perinatal Social worker, I have a job to provide specific duties like helping mother’s process complex information about pregnancies and infant concerns; and finding ways to access community support (Admin, M.). By providing these support systems there are different offers of supports for mother who have lost an infant within any of these stages. With helping them cope, communicate, and except what has happened, and how to deal with their feelings( Admin, M.). These are strategies to keep from going down a very dark and depressed road. I found that not only should Human service workers support teen mothers into finding a better support system for their children, but we should encourage them to either return to school or receive their high school diploma (much sooner than later). With the research I gathered, it came to my attention that government support should be temporary and only help to encourage a mother to eventually find a better support system. Another option is to simply try to enforce the importance in our schools that waiting for a stable to time is best to have children. After reading youth.gov they stated that by age 22 only 50% of teen mothers have received High School Diplomas (Youth.gov). They also stated how non-teen father have a 20-30% more likelihood of graduating high school (Youth.gov). These are crucial indicators when it
Magana 2 comes to trying to have young families become independent from the government later in the future. Teens seem to not think of the potentially hardships that feed into raising a successful child into society. By that I express my concerns of finances, health and support systems that surround them and their families. Along with helping teen mothers and their infants with finding better chance to a stable life, Social Workers should keep an eye on a mother’s mental health. As a teen, Amy may be suffering from stressors like passing a math exam or being accepted into a friend group. So once finding out a teen girl (in this case Amy) is pregnant there can arise many other stressors. How will the teen mother pay for baby
