BIOL 1208 Lab Report Name: Sarah Henthorn Group Members: Matt Sandoz and Laura Soileau Lab Topic: Potato Sucrose Experiment Abstract: Our group hypothesized that different solutions and amounts of sucrose could alter the mass of potato tuber segments. To test this hypothesis, we placed the same amount of potato tuber segments in six different solutions ranging from 0M sucrose to 0.5M sucrose. Our results show that the amount of sucrose in solution does have a definite effect on the mass. Introduction: This experiment helps us to develop an understanding of isotonic, hypertonic, and hypotonic effects on a cell and also what drives these processes. It also helps us to learn how to formulate testable hypotheses. Materials and Method: The materials that were used in this experiment were a balance, weight boat, 6 tuber segments of potato, forcepts/tweezers, paper towels, screen, six 250 mL beakers, metric ruler, cold tap water, marking pen or labeling tape, a razor blade, 100 mL of deionized water, 100 mL of .1M sucrose solution, 100 mL of .2M sucrose solution, 100 mL of .3M sucrose solution, 100 mL of .4M sucrose solution, and 100 mL of .5M sucrose solution. Each group was given six potato segments 4cm in length. A razor blade was used to remove any leftover skin and to cut each potato stalk into smaller equally sized segments. Each segment was approximately 2 mm thick. Each group of small slices were collectively rinsed with cold water and then blotted with a dry paper towel. An initial weight was taken of each set of small potato discs by weighing a weight boat and the mass of each set with the weight boat. The weight of
