LECTURE Opium Papaver somniferum (Opium Poppies) Opium comes from the opium poppy . The actual opium comes from the opium poppy pod before it turns ripe. To harvest it, farmers slit the poppy pod open and opium in liquid form will be released. The liquid form of opium is used a source of morphine . Morphine is found in the opium juice in the poppy pod. It is purified through crystallization . Morphine has the same effects as opium, but it is more potent and powerful. Friedrich Wilhelm Serturner (1783-1841) Friedrich Wilhelm Serturner was a German pharmacist who discovered the morphine molecule in 1803. He was the first person to isolate morphine from opium. This was the first time a pure chemical substance was isolated from the opium poppy and proven to be the active substance. He was able to purify and crystallize the chemical. In addition to being a cough-medicine and diarrhea- treatment, opium also produces a psychoactive effect, which is like a dreamy, hallucinatory state that is pleasant to a lot of folks. He discovered that morphine was producing these effects and realized that morphine was the main active component in opium. This was the first time anyone had ever done this and it was significant in the history of chemistry and organic chemistry.

Codeine makes up 17% by weight in opium. Morphine Serturner’s discovery marked the beginning of the natural products chemistry. Morphine is a powerful opioid and because it acts directly on the CNS to relieve pain, it’s often used in medicine as an analgesic . Heroin Heroin One of the most famous opiates is heroin, which is a diacetylmorphine . It is the chemical derivative of morphine and was created by the pharmaceutical industry. Heroin is often used as a recreational drug and has an extremely high potential for abuse. It crosses the blood-brain-barrier more effectively and is two to three times more potent than morphine.
