2/4/08 Atmosphere and Surface Energy Balance (chapter 2 p. 46-47 and chapter 4 p. 89- 100) - Energy is the ability to do work on some type of matter; work is done when the matter is pushed, pulled, or lifted. - Heat is energy in the process of being transferred from one object to another. o heat always flows from hotter object cooler object, and the transfer changes the temperature of each object - heat capacity – the ratio of the amount of heat energy absorbed by the substance to the rise in temperature of the substance - ΔH large- high heat capacity small – low heat capacity - ΔT small – high heat capacity large – low - the transfer of energy is accomplished by 3 processes: o 1. conduction (least important) o 2. convection o 3. radiation (most important) - transfer of heat from molecule to molecule within a substance or between two substances is called conduction (air is a shitty conductor) - transfer of heat by the mass movement of a fluid is called convection - energy transferred in the form of electromagnetic waves is termed radiation
