22/10/2007 17:25:00 Will Masterson BUAD 403 Court Report The Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center I reported at had a different vibe than any of the traffic courts I’ve briefly attended in the past. A sense of deliberate intimidation is evident from the moment you step inside. Upon Arrival, a security guard at the first metal detecting site directed me to the fifth floor clerk’s office. The clerk gave me a “Student Proof of Appearance” (attached) and pointed me in the direction of the 11 th floor, dept. 111, home to the honorable Judge Charles F. Palmer. I was nervous enough to be in such a place, and it didn’t get any better when I entered the room to an empty gallery and a crying witness.

The Judge made eye contact with me and smiled which eased my nerves, but then the bailiff motioned for me to come over to his desk. My entrance by no means halted the trial, but I did feel as, considering the circumstances, I was noticed by everyone. I told the bailiff I was a student who just wanted to observe the case for a Business Law class. He showed me considerable respect and actually filled me in on the case with his hand covering his mouth to a whisper. It was a domestic violence case, named the People vs. Estrada, and the witness on the stand was the ex-girlfriend of the suspect. As it turned out, she was being very wary of her own words and was generally reluctant to cooperate with either attorney. After having a foundation of the situation I decided to return to the empty gallery and begin observing all the participants and features of the courtroom.
