Melanie Larson English 101 Deborah Weagel 12/15/2008 Nutcracker Nerves Ever since I started dancing, preparations for the Nutcracker have always been the same . It’s like an everyday routine . I wear the same old costume, with my bland pink tights and the same worn-out ballet flats . My hair gets pulled back into a bun so tight my falsely lashed eyes can hardly blink; about a pound of foundation is applied to my face with layers of over-done pink blush, and drawn on lips are so red it is impossible to miss my smile . Typically, after preparation, my fears are minimal as I get put on stage with other girls identical to me, knowing the audience is watching us as a whole, then the music starts and I’m usually dancing to the same old music with the ideal dance choreographed the same way every year, but not this time . After years of practice, motivation, and commitment, I sit backstage on the cold cement floor watching everyone else dancing to the same old song I once did . I simply move my hands along with the motion the girls are doing on stage in attempt to block out my fears, even though it doesn’t seem to help . I grab a slightly frozen water bottle and sip on it slowly as I’m mesmerized in my “what if” thoughts: What if I fall? What if I forget? What if I’m laughed at? I set my water aside, leaving my hands damp and dewy . My nervousness consumes me and my heart beats rapidly into my stomach, with a continuous pulsing, as I hear the current music
