MUAR 392 – Study Questions – Midterm 29. From Surf to  Smile What motivated Brian Wilson to try and surpass his earlier recordings?  - He heard the Beatles’ album Rubber Sound and also because of the work of Phil Spector  he wanted to use his talent before it faded away. He had ambitions beyond regular pop  music.  What was he trying to accomplish on Pet Sounds and “Good Vibrations”? - wanted to write a song about something else than Surf themes. He wanted it to be the  summation of  his musical vision, a harmonic convergence of imagination and talent,  production values and craft, songwriting and spirituality. Chapter 29 resume: Surf music (late 50s – early 60s):  - comes from Southern California’s suburb - is a litany of beaches, blondes, sport coupes - guitar dominated, some early instrumental bands Beach Boys:  - multipart harmony signing (derived from the 50s gospel quartet), contrapuntal,  - falsetto-led vocals - Chuck Berry riffs
