Bhagat Suny Bhagat College Writing I Anne Murphy The Lesson vs. A Marriage of Unequals Not everyone is an upper class millionaire with the ability to buy virtually whatever they want. There are those that find an item a luxury, but the same item is not as important to others. In the short story “The Lesson”, by Toni Cade Bambara, Slyvia learns that toys that cost as much as her rent are being bought for babies of the rich. In Chapter 3 of Class Matters , a middle class man marries an upper class woman who can easily afford all the man struggles to attain. Both stories prove that “equal chance to pursue happiness means equal crack at the dough (chance at money)” (Bambara, 377). Slyvia is not as happy as rich person (she lusts not having a fancy sail boat) because she is not as wealthy. Dan Croteau, the middle class husband of the unequal marriage seems to be happier, not only because of his love marriage, but also because of a lower financial burden. “The Lesson” is a short story about a poor African-American girl, Slyvia.
