Whiten et al (Chimp Cultures): What methods were used to determine whether the variation observed was due to cultural processes? In phase 1, a list of candidate cultural variants was created. The researchers then added and defined unpublished candidate patterns. The patterns were then split up and lumped as appropriate thus creating candidate cultural variants that were fully and consensually defined. In phase 2 the researchers assigned to each behavior category, one of six codes as applicable to their site. 1) customary 2) habitual 3.) present 4.) absent 5.)ecological explanation 6.) unknown. These codings were cross-checked and confirmed by senior colleagues at each site. Van Schaik et al: What hypotheses did were tested in order to determine whether the observed patterning of variation was likely to be due to cultural processes as opposed to being caused by ecological and genetic differences between sites? Which of these were supported? The innovation and diffusion hypothesis
