INTRODUCTION The components of proteins and polypeptides are the amino acids. There are polar and nonpolar amino acids. Amino acids polymerize by forming covalent bond, called peptide bond, between the carboxyl group of one and amino group of another. The primary structure of a polymer consisiting of different monomer types refers to the monomer sequence. Biological polymers are rarely fully extended, as linear chains; due to: the interactions between various amino acid side chains the relative degree of interaction of different molecules with water Instead, they fold to form complex three-dimensional structures. Frequently, monomeric units at some positions along the chain engage in specific interactions with other units close by or at some distance along the linear sequence. An extensive pattern of such interactions (mainly hydrogen bonds) that forms an identifiable sub-structure in the polymer is called secondary structure.
